Welcome
to the
Volcanics eLearning Community, a professional learning community of nine schools situated in Hamilton, Bay of Plenty, South Waikato and the Central
Plateau of New Zealand. Of our nine schools, two are area
schools while the other seven are
secondary schools. Our schools are situated in Hamilton, Putaruru, Tokoroa, Mangakino, Murapara, Taupo, Turangi and Ohakune.
The Community has been in existence since 2003. Its core function is to widen curriculum choices for students through video conferencing and other online learning opportunities. There is also a strong focus on the development of communities of practice around effective pedagogy, evidence based practice and the use of digital technologies to enhance learning.

Community Goals
- Increase the utilisation of digital opportunities to enrich the learning of students in Volcanics Community schools.
- Utilise digital opportunities to increase the breadth of the curriculum available to students and provide them the opportunity to study with tertiary institutions.
- Increase the utilisation of digital opportunities to enhance the
professional growth of teachers in Volcanics schools, including the sharing of
resources, learning strategies and the creation of communities of practice.
- Continually improve the number and effectiveness of teachers delivering courses on line and through the use of online tools
- Develop the capability and capacity of Volcanics schools through continual and focussed professional development and by expanding the membership base.
- Develop relationships, and share knowledge gained, with other online learning community networks
